Reworked Sherlock Menu to more accurately and quickly open up Sherlock Menu in a different search mode. If Sherlock Menu fails to pre-configure Sherlock using the new method it will fall back onto the older method (which is unreliable for some users).
Added a Control Strip Module that mirrors the functionality of the System Extension. Currently both items use the same preferences, changing one alters the other.
Added a little more Appearance Manager support to Sherlock Menu Control.
Added an error handler that should create a log file called "Sherlock Menu Error" in the main hard disk with some information in it that will help me pin down any spurrious behaviors that remain.
NOTE: You must use the new Sherlock Menu Control to change the Control Strip Module without rebooting, using an older copy will only affect the newer copy unless you reboot.
You can use EITHER the System Extension or Control Strip Module of Sherlock Menu, or both if you want. They operate independently and in the exact same manner except for preferences.
2.1.1 - 6/18/99
Removed a debugging routine from SMC that showed itself after entering the registration code and running SMC again.
Sherlock Menu will now allow its "Register" item to be disabled/removed after registering.
2.1 - 6/16/99
Sherlock Menu can now be reconfigured *without* rebooting the computer. Simply run "Sherlock Menu Control" (SMC) and change the target program, then click on "Okay" to make the change take effect immediately in Sherlock Menu.
NOTE: SMC will not dynamically change Sherlock Menu as long as it is unregistered, you will still need to reboot to get the change to take effect until you register and enter your registration code in SMC.
Clicking on "Cancel" in SMC will not apply the changes if any.
Sherlock Menu's menu includes an "Edit" item to open Sherlock Menu Control if its in the Control Panels folder.
Added some Balloon Help to the SMC window to identify the information listed (hover over the icons).
Added Mac OS 8.x Appearance support to the SMC window and alert dialogs. This may/may not work with Kaliedecope as well.
New PASoft "Registration Code" system to keep track of registrations and to enable feature(s) in the future that are disabled in the try-out/demo version.
To register, pay for Sherlock Menu using the Kagi payment handling service:
1) Go to: <http://www.pasoftware.com/products/sherlockmenu/register.html>
2) Wait for the Registration Code email to arrive.
3) Run SMC and click on the "Cancel" button.
4) Select "Register" from the file menu and enter the information.
5) Click on "Register". If you get a message saying you entered the wrong code double check it and make sure you type in your name AS LISTED in the email you receive.
2.0.5 - 6/2/99
Fixed a small problem with French and Portuguese menus crashing the computer upon startup.
Possibly fixed at least one variant of the "search mode doesn't work" problem some experience.
2.0.2 - 5/25/99
International versions of Sherlock Menu were not changing the first menu item to reflect the selected target application (other than Sherlock). English version was not affected.
2.0.1 - 5/17/99
Update the "...Control" application's window. This window is now semi-modal allowing it to be moved around the screen and switched to the background.
2.0 - 5/10/99
The final release of Sherlock Menu 2.0 is compatible with Mac OS 8.6's Sherlock. Previous beta releases of 2.0 and earlier versions are not.
Cosmetic tweaks to the interface.
Now the "Location" shows the actual application path instead of a path to an alias file.
If the target is renamed Sherlock Menu should be able to find it in most cases.
2.0b4 - 5/8/99
The application is now a "Application Control Panel" (type 'APPC') and if dropped onto the System folder it will be routed to the Control Panels folder.
IF you dont see the icon for "Sherlock Menu Control" rebuilding the Desktop should reveal it. Reboot the computer and hold down command-option keys till asked to rebuild the desktop.
Uses different Navigation Services window which includes instruction message.
The "config" window is now shown and works okay.
Waiting on Mac OS 8.6 to check Compatibility with the new Sherlock application...
NOTE: The config window may show the wrong "location" of a selected item. I am aware of this and will have to filter out "bad" locations. Please do not email me stating this is a "bug" - its not!
2.0b3 - 5/3/99
Added Navigation Services support, seems to work fine.
Added in preference resource to the app in case the User ran "Sherlock Menu Control" before installing the new "Sherlock Menu" extension. Prevents 'resource not found' errors if "Sherlock Menu" is not installed and loaded first (which sets up the preferences file).
Icons should be synch'd between both components.
2.0b2 - 5/2/99
Prefs were set incorrectly in the newly made prefs file, fixed that.
URLs are now in a resource for easier updating
2.0b1 - 5/1/99
Sherlock Menu can now be set to open alternative programs other than "Sherlock" when using the first menu item.
To change the setting run the "Sherlock Menu Control" application and select a new program.
To be added:
* Navigation Serivces instead of the "old-style" Open window
* Better interface for "...Control" application to show current setting initially
* About... box for "...Control" application
NOTE: The "...Control" application will only show true Macintosh applications of type "APPL". This will exclude anything that is not an application such as Control Panels or files (scripts).
1.6 - April 15 1999
Sherlock Menu will now look on *all* mounted and local (non-network) volumes for Sherlock starting with the "default" volume which is usually where the active Operating System is located. This should include Hard Disks, Zip, Jaz, SuperDisks, CD ROMs, SyQuest, MO, Orb and even DVDs.
If "Sherlock" is renamed to something like " Sherlock" or "!Sherlock" or "Sherlock App" then Sherlock Menu should still be able to find it now. If Sherlock is *not* in the Apple Menu and its name does *not* contain "Sherlock" then you are going to be disappointed - stop moving and renaming your System files!
1.5.2 - March 22 1999
Fixed a bug introduced in version 1.5 that would prevent the search mode pre-configuration from working on some Macs.
Fixed a bug from version 1.5.1 that would not properly enable the "Register" menu item.
1.5.1 - March 17 1999
Sherlock Menu will now correctly pre-configure Sherlock to use a specific search mode on computers with multiple System folders or similar setups.
If the Sherlock application was renamed Sherlock Menu will attempt to identify it by its location in the Apple Menu.
NOTE: If Sherlock was moved OUT of the Apple Menu AND renamed then Sherlock Menu will not be able to locate it. Sorry I cant support every single possible configuration in existance, this is about all I can do at this point.
Added a bit more error handling for the new pre-configuration features just in case.
Modified Sherlock Menu to allow easier localization in the future by storing critical text data in resources in the Sherlock Menu file.
NOTE: Sherlock Menu may not work with "Sherlock" in Mac OS 8.6 which is in beta testing right now. Sherlock Menu will be updated to be compatible with Mac OS 8.6 as soon as it is made available to the general public.
1.5 - March 12 1999
Sherlock Menu will now let you pre-select the searching mode in Sherlock, before it is actually launched. Thus you can specify "Find File", "Find by Content" or "Search Internet" before you even get to Sherlock.
Sherlock Menu will now remove the "Register" menu item if you select it at some point.
1.1.1 - Feb. 25 1999
Sherlock Menu now checks to see if the application it found is really "Sherlock" since Apple used the same file type/creator codes as with "Find File" (not my fault!) which is how the app is located.
Sherlock Menu now has its Bundle Bit set so its icon should show up properly in the Finder and Extensions Manager windows. Dunno why that was undone, blame it on ResEdit.
If Sherlock Menu is loaded on a pre-Mac OS 8.5 system you should see the normal icon with a red X through it, Sherlock Menu itself will not load.
1.1 - Feb. 21 1999
Sherlock Menu is now entirely PowerPC™ native. Thus it must be used only on a Power Macintosh or PowerPC™ upgraded Mac running Mac OS 8.5 or newer. Sherlock is only included in Mac OS 8.5 and newer and is the first OS release to not support any legacy systems (680x0) so this should not be a problem.
Reorganized Sherlock Menu to transition to the newer format to be introduced in a future version and to help eliminate "accidental" accesses of the "About" or "Register" web pages.
Sherlock Menu will now check to see if Sherlock is already opened, and if it is bring it to foreground instead of attempting to launch it.
If there is not enough RAM to launch Sherlock, Sherlock Menu will attempt to re-launch it using the minimum memory setting.
